Blind Pig 30th Anniversary

BPCD 2003

By Art Tipaldi
October 2006

In the 1970s, blues labels like Alligator, Rounder, Antones and Blind Pig were created from the meager savings of devout fans. Today, as the odometers of these blues labels turn milestone anniversaries, we fans are the lucky recipients of the celebratory compilations.

Like most labors of blues love, the Blind Pig label was born from Jerry Del Guidice and Edward Chmelewski wanting to record and share the performances of the players who played the Blind Pig Cafe in Ann Arbor, Mich.

From that very first Blind Pig artist, Boogie Woogie Red, to the most up to the minute recordings by Deanne Bogart and Jeremy Spencer, consumers have always found the best of the blues in every Pig product. In addition to recording classic blues musicians like Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Pinetop Perkins, Johnny Shines, Jimmy Rogers, James Cotton, Eddie C. Campbell, Luther Allison, Magic Slim, Walter Horton, Carey Bell, and others, Blind Pig has also been willing to provide recording opportunities to an energetic crop of young musicians.

Rod Piazza, Coco Montoya, Debbie Davies, Roy Rogers, Norton Buffalo, Jimmy Thackery, John Mooney, Tommy Castro, Chris Cain, Studebaker John, Sarah Brown, Joanna Connor, Deborah Coleman, Albert Cummings, Popa Chubby, Bill Perry, Smokin’ Joe Kubek, Bnois King, Harper, Big Bill Morganfield, and vocalist Renee Austin anchor the label’s roster of exciting young blues torch bearers.

To celebrate its 30th Anniversary, Blind Pig is throwing its vaults open with a performance DVD and a two-disc (33 tunes) rack of USDA blues tunes.

Tommy Castro starts the party with the rocking “Just Like Me.” From there, other guitarists like Smokin’ Joe Kubek, Popa Chubby, Debbie Davies, Omar Dykes, John Mooney, Nick Curran, Albert Cummings, and Bill Perry light the six guitar strings on fire.

Blues historians will appreciate the songs by legends like Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Junior Wells, Big Walter Horton, Pinetop Perkins, George “Harmonica” Smith, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Arthur Adams with B.B. King, and Magic Slim.

In addition, Blind Pig has included many songs from its most recent releases such as Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers, Elvin Bishop, Rev. Billy C. Wirtz, Harper, Deanna Bogart, Dr. Duke Tumatoe, and the label’s most recent rediscovery, Fleetwood Mac’s Jeremy Spencer. who walked away from the band in 1971, at its height. In 2005, he was convinced to record his blues again.

The DVD includes live performances by Tommy Castro, Popa Chubby, Magic Slim, Rod Piazza, Rev. Wirtz, and Smokin’ Joe, from their recent Blind Pig DVDs.

This 30th anniversary party CD is a dynamite place for new fans of the blues to start their blues shopping list. Old friends of the label will enjoy celebrating the important music this sun-glassed hog has brought to the world. Just sit back, hit the shuffle button, and pig out on this musical feast.
