The second annual gathering of the Boston music community to support the efforts of Right Turn, a creative drug, alcohol, and mental health program for creative folks such as musicians and artists, will take place at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 at Johnny D’s Music Club, Davis Square, Somerville.
Many of us in the blues community are committed to helping our friends and colleagues when they need it most.
The suggested donation is $15.
The evening will start at 7 p.m. with an acoustic dinner featuring Randy Vera, Justin Beech, and Liv King. Vera & Beech have been enthralling crowds for nearly two decades, and their set will unveil some of their latest material. Liv King, who garners comparisons to Joss Stone, is a young lady with a huge and soulful voice.
The second set, a marathon two-hour revue from 8-10 p.m., will feature: Ron Levy, Darrell Nulisch, Richard “Rosy” Rosenblatt, the Matt Stubbs Band, Luke Mullholand, Tony Gallo, Racky Thomas, Big Jack Ward, Barrett Anderson, Mike Null, Nick Adams, Gregg Miller, Julien Kasper, Diane Blue, and Dan Lawson.
A sturdy backbone will support the harp and horn players and guitarists, including Per Hanson (Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters) on drums, and Michael “Mudcat” Ward (Sugar Ray & the Bluetones) on bass. When Per gets worn out, Koko Taylor’s drummer, Duke Blues will step behind the kit, and Right-Turn’s own percussionist, Woody Giessmann will be on hand all night.
In addition, singer Phil Pemberton will be making his first appearance at Johnny Ds since joining Roomful of Blues this year, and two of New England’s finest young female vocalists, Gretchen Bostrom (Juke Joint 5) and Jamie Lynn Hart will grace the stage. Two extraordinary sax players, Dick Lourie from Juke Joint 5, and Nat Simpkins, will augment the revue.
The Matthew Stubbs Band will hit the stage between 10:15 and 11:00 PM to deliver an electrifying set of his latest original material from an upcoming release.
The grand finale jam will run from 11:00 p.m. until closing.
